Since I've moved back to my home state of Minnesota (or MinneSNOWta as my mom calls it), everyone's been telling me how much I'm going to miss the non-snow of Ohio. It snows a tiny bit in Ohio and mostly just stays around the 30 degree range, so snow, melt, freeze, snow, melt, freeze. I hate the ice. Ice scares the bejeezus out of me. Today, here in the great snowy north, it is really snowing for the first time. We have probably a good inch out there already. And it's gorgeous!! Here's a pic from my desk:
Snow in Minnesota isn't the same as in Ohio. You don't really enjoy it in Ohio. There is just barely enough snow in Ohio to make tiny snowmen. Now, I lived in Columbus, and I understand that it's not the same as it is in the country (I grew up on the farm so I know how this works so calm down everyone) but I could always see the grass through the snow in Ohio.
Here in Minneapolis, we get past that freezing zone pretty quickly. It doesn't usually rain a lot before it starts to snow, and it gets down to freezing in just the right way that, for the most part, ice is much less of a problem. Mostly it's the sudden 3 inches that happened overnight that people get all bent out of shape about. But I love it.
I love the snow because there is something so gorgeous about everything covered in white. I love how it rests so delicately on pine branches and the tips of pointed bronze fences. I love how it lands on my head without soaking me right away, and getting a snowflake in your eye is MUCH more comfortable than getting a raindrop in your eye. Snow is bright. Snow is soft. Snow is fun! When you have enough snow, you can make snowmen, snow angels, snowball fights, igloos, sledding, skiing, snow sculptures, and all of your Christmas lights somehow look so much more magical.
I have to take a moment and remind everyone that snow and cold are two different things. Nobody likes the freezing cold. Nobody likes it when the wind chill is -50 degrees and gusts are at 30 mph. So many people complain about the snow and the cold. "Oh gosh that is going to be SO cold, why would you ever want to move back there??" It's hard to describe the quiet peace that settles in my soul when it's snowing. :)
